HEARING
"Hearing, or auditory perception, is the ability to perceive sounds by detecting vibrations, changes in the pressure of the surrounding medium through time, through an organ such as the ear. The academic field concerned with hearing is auditory science. Sound may be heard through solid, liquid, or gaseous matter. It is one of the traditional five senses; partial or total inability to hear is called hearing loss..."

Hearing Impairment/ Hearing Loss
"Your ear has three parts--the outer, the middle, and the inner ear. You may have trouble hearing if there is a problem with any of these parts. There are three things to know about hearing loss. These include the:
1. type of hearing loss 2. degree of hearing loss 3. configuration or the shape of hearing loss Children with hearing loss may have trouble learning to talk. They may not do well in school. Adults can have trouble at work, in school, and with friends. It is important to have a hearing test if you think there may be a problem..." https://www.asha.org/public/hearing/What-is-Hearing-Loss/ |
Conductive Hearing Loss:
"Your ear is made up of three parts— the outer, the middle, and the inner ear. A conductive hearing loss happens when sounds cannot get through the outer and middle ear. It may be hard to hear soft sounds. Louder sounds may be muffled. Medicine or surgery can often fix this type of hearing loss..." https://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Conductive-Hearing-Loss/ |
Sensorineural Hearing Loss:
"Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, happens after inner ear damage. Problems with the nerve pathways from your inner ear to your brain can also cause SNHL. Soft sounds may be hard to hear. Even louder sounds may be unclear or may sound muffled. This is the most common type of permanent hearing loss. Most of the time, medicine or surgery cannot fix SNHL. Hearing aids may help you hear..." https://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Sensorineural-Hearing-Loss/ |
Mixed Hearing Loss:
"Sometimes, a conductive hearing loss happens at the same time as a sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL. This means that there may be damage in the outer or middle ear and in the inner ear or nerve pathway to the brain. This is a mixed hearing loss..." https://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Mixed-Hearing-Loss/ |
Children"Some possible signs of hearing loss in an infant or toddler:
|
Adults"Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, aging, disease, and heredity. People with hearing loss may find it hard to have conversations with friends and family. They may also have trouble understanding a doctor’s advice, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms.Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those older than 75 has difficulty hearing. But, some people may not want to admit they have trouble hearing...."

Aural Rehabilitation
Children:
" Often with children, aural rehabilitation services would more appropriately be called "habilitative" rather than "rehabilitative." "Rehabilitation" focuses on restoring a skill that is lost. In children, a skill may not be there in the first place, so it has to be taught -- hence, the services would be "habilitative," not "rehabilitative." Specific services for children depend on individual needs as dictated by the current age of the child; the age of onset of the hearing loss; the age at which the hearing loss was discovered; the severity of the hearing loss; the type of hearing loss; the extent of hearing loss; and the age at which amplification was introduced. The aural rehabilitation plan is also influenced by the communication mode the child is using. Examples of communication modes are auditory-oral, American Sign Language, total communication, Cued speech, and manually coded English. The most debilitating consequence of onset of hearing loss in childhood is its disruption to learning speech and language..." . https://www.asha.org/public/hearing/treatment/child_aur_rehab.htm |
Adults:
" The definition of aural rehabilitation (AR), as well as the terminology used to describe the practice of AR, has varied and evolved over the years. <> Montano (2014) defined AR as: - ...a person-centered approach to assessment and management of hearing loss that encourages the creation of a therapeutic environment conducive to a shared decision process which is necessary to explore and reduce the impact of hearing loss on communication, activities, and participations (p. 27). <> Boothroyd (2007) defined AR as: - ...the reduction of hearing-loss-induced deficits of function, activity, participation, and quality of life through sensory management, instruction, perceptual training, and counseling (p. 63). <> Ross (1997) included in his definition of AR: - ...any device, procedure, information, interaction, or therapy which lessens the communicative and psychosocial consequences of a hearing loss (p. 19)..." https://www.asha.org/Practice-Portal/Professional-Issues/Aural-Rehabilitation-for-Adults/ |
Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD):
"Broadly stated, (Central) Auditory Processing [(C)AP] refers to the efficiency and effectiveness by which the central nervous system (CNS) utilizes auditory information. Narrowly defined, (C)AP refers to the perceptual processing of auditory information in the CNS and the neurobiologic activity that underlies that processing and gives rise to electrophysiologic auditory potentials. ..."
https://www.asha.org/policy/TR2005-00043/ "Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), is an umbrella term for a variety of disorders that affect the way the brain processes auditory information.Individuals with APD usually have normal structure and function of the outer, middle and inner ear (peripheral hearing). However, they cannot process the information they hear in the same way as others do, which leads to difficulties in recognizing and interpreting sounds, especially the sounds composing speech..."
